The American Lung Association seeks qualified candidates for the position of Public Policy Intern for spring 2013.
The Public Policy Internwill assist the Director of Public Policy in the distribution of advocacy materials and outreach, providing policy-related assistance during the 2013 Legislative Session and performing requested tasks related to Clean Air Action Network and Smokefree Texas. The Public Policy Intern will also assist the Director of Public Policy with the logistics and research during the legislative session including, but not limited to: monitoring and reporting on committee hearings and floor action; legislative bill analysis; office visits, event organization and volunteer recruitment; environmental health and tobacco related research, etc. The term will be for one (1) semester and will be scheduled to work for 20-30 hours per week.
- Assist in the creation and distribution of advocacy materials and outreach
- Assist the Director of Public Policy throughout the legislative session as requested
- Assist with Smokefree Texas activities and meetings as requested
- Assist in Clean Air Action Network activities and meetings as requested
- Assist Director of Public Policy as needed
Performance Goals
- Assist in the preparation of written statements as needed for public policy activities
- Provide Legislative Analysis and reports in a timely fashion
- Attend Leadership Council meetings and volunteer meetings when required
- Assist, in measureable terms, in meeting participation for Volunteer recruitment, CAAN partner recruitment, and joint Development/Health Promotions meetings
- Special Projects as necessary
Job requirements:
- Be actively enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, a university government, policy, public affairs, communications, or other related program. Current students preferably should have at least a junior standing
- Have knowledge of and interest in the non-profit industry and Texas politics
- Possess excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Possess excellent leadership and organizational skills
- Excellent people and leadership skills, with an ability to coach, motivate and develop volunteers
- Ability to prioritize tasks and focus on multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
- Must have the use of a personal laptop, cellular phone, and vehicle
- Non-smoker
