About: 
Workers Defense Project (WDP) is a membership-based organization that empowers low-income workers to achieve fair employment through education, direct services, organizing and strategic partnerships.  WDP is a worker center and part of a national movement of organizations that seek to provide low-wage workers with the resources they need to improve their working and living conditions.  WDP is one of the few organizations in Texas working to address workplace abuse faced by low-wage workers. The organization is one of the most established worker centers in the South and a leader in fighting for fair conditions for working people.
Job Description:
The Development Intern will work with the Development Manager.  The Development Manager is responsible for fundraising for the organization through special events, individual donor cultivation, mailings, online appeals, marketing and acquiring donations from organizations, churches and law firms.  This position requires someone who has excellent communication skills, a great personality, takes direction well, very personable and very efficient.  Fluency in Spanish, experience in using WordPress, and extensive knowledge of Facebook and Twitter are a plus.  Internship broken down in the following categories: 
  • Data Entry: Entering address changes, contributions and other information in WDP’s database
  • Events: Assisting with special events including anniversary event, open houses, and attending networking events.
  • Social Networking: Maintaining WDP’s Twitter and Facebook accounts
Duration:
This internship is for the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters.  Applicants should be able to commit through the end of the school year.  Commitment is 10-12 hours per week.
Compensation: 

$100/month stipend plus mileage reimbursement.  You will gain invaluable knowledge of non-profit operations, how to fundraise, and inner workings of organizing in the labor movement in Texas.

Video Production Team

Cooperation Texas seeks a team of 3-5 interns to edit and produce educational videos about various US worker co-ops for our Cooperation @ Work video series. This internship is for the fall of 2012, with the option of extending the project through the spring of 2013:

  • Work cooperatively to complete 5-10 short educational videos
  • Create a consistent theme and feel for the series
  • Communicate with worker co-ops participating in the project to collect footage
  • Edit footage into 3-5 minute videos
  • Work with staff and event planning intern to present Cooperation @ Work video series at events

Requirements:

  • Education level: Bachelor’s degree in progress or higher
  • Subject/Major: Radio/Film/Television; Marketing; Public Relations; Communications
  • Graphic design skills
  • Demonstrated interest in the cooperative economy

Research & Design Intern

Cooperation Texas seeks a research and graphic design intern for the fall of 2012.

Responsibilities:

  • Research the nature and benefits of worker-owned cooperatives at the local, national and international level
  • Research economic inequality in Texas in general and Austin in particular
  • Craft an infographic on the status of inequality in Austin and/or Texas
  • Craft an infographic that creatively depicts information gathered

Requirements:

  • Education level: Bachelor’s degree in progress or higher
  • Subject/Major: Radio/Film/Television; Marketing; Public Relations; Communications
  • Graphic design skills
  • Demonstrated interest in the cooperative economy
  • Strong written and visual communication
  • Spanish-language proficiency preferred, not required

PRIMARY FUNCTION
To provide broad ranging administrative and programmatic support to the Austin education department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary

  • Provide assistance to Austin staff on anti-bias training programs, including Confronting Anti-Semitism and Educators’ Breakfast.
  • Assist in coordinating No Place for Hate® Central Texas schools, including school meetings and database management.
  • Assist in developing a strategic plan and reports on anti-bias trainings and education programs.

Secondary

  • Attend, participate, and provide staff support in lay-led task forces and committees such as the Education Committee.
  • Assist Education staff with administrative duties.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Does not supervise or train others.

QUALIFICATIONS

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and presentation skills
  • Understanding and appreciation of diversity issues
  • Computer skills including word processing and database management

Work Experience
Community Service and/or education experience.

Education
Course work or studies in social studies, education, or social work.

Work Environment
Ability to lift and carry between 10 and 15 lbs. Work schedule flexible to student’s schedule.
