Communications/ Public Relations Internship
COMPANY OVERVIEW:
HealthStart is seeking a Communication/Public Relations Intern to help spread the word about our blueprint for creating healthy communities through children’s science-based health education, teaching children how to be healthy from a young age. We have developed a comprehensive, robust health and science curriculum, Health Education for Youngsters! along with a cafeteria-based nutrition awareness program, Community Health Education Workshops (CHEWs), and a mobile game, Monstralia.
HealthStart hopes to increase our organizational sustainability and put a communications road map in place with your help.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Health Start is currently seeking a Summer 2017 intern with highly developed communications/public relations/event planning skills who can work 12-15 hours per week. You will be part of a team shaping and spreading HealthStart’s message through social and traditional media outlets that may include daily Facebook and Twitter posts, monthly newsletter production, donor correspondence and management, marketing campaigns designed to inform and attract education partners and related tasks. All of these experiences should be highly transferrable to a professional work environment.
Job responsibilities will include:
Raising HealthStart’s profile within our community
Executing a media and public relations plan
Working directly with HealthStart’s Development/Marketing Committee, Board, and Director
Helping write HealthStart’s Monthly Newsletter
Other public relations and communications related tasks as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates for the position must have experience/familiarity with public relations, communications, event planning, nonprofit development or related activit(ies). Employment experience or a strong interest in social entrepreneurship, social marketing, health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Experience with digital arts or graphic design is a plus. Must be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, and the Internet specifically social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, email clients, etc
In addition, candidates should have some or all of the following skills:
A willingness to learn new things or new ways of doing things
Ability to meet deadlines with little or no daily onsite supervision

Development Internship

HealthStart is seeking a Development Intern to help raise funds to aid in fulfilling our mission to build healthy communities through children’s science-based health education. HealthStart teaches children how to be healthy from a young age. We have developed a comprehensive, robust health and science curriculum, Health Education for Youngsters! along with a cafeteria-based nutrition awareness program, Community Health Education Workshops (CHEWs), and a mobile game, Monstralia.
Interns will help with a variety of tasks that may include grant writing, implementing our marketing/public relations strategy planning and executing fundraising events.
HealthStart hopes to increase our organizational sustainability and create a sustainable grant writing and fundraising development road map in place with your help.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Health Start is seeking a Summer 2017 Development Intern with a strong interest in or prior experience with fundraising, grant writing, and event planning/ execution who can work 12-15 hours per week. Candidates for the position must be creative problem solvers with exceptional interpersonal skills. Employment experience in fundraising, proposal writing or knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies is a plus. Must be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, the Internet, social media, and Adobe Creative Suite.
Job Responsibilities
Help execute HealthStart’s fundraising plan
Perform in-depth research into grant-making organizations
Write grant applications that display meticulous grammar and spelling
Seek financial support from individuals, foundations and corporations
Utilize Social Media to disseminate HealthStart’s mission and fundraising plan.
Assist with other development projects as requested

Game Development & Graphic Design Internship
COMPANY OVERVIEW:
HealthStart builds healthy communities through children’s science based health education. We teach kids how their body works, what it is made of and how this relates to what to feed and how to keep their bodies fit. Good nutrition and fitness are necessary to keep individuals healthy, but to create community wellbeing we need more. HealthStart lessons also teach kids that community health depends on us taking care of one another and our environment.
Interns will use their creative talents to help change the world for the better through creation of graphics to supplement our marketing/public relations strategy, fundraising events, and health education mobile game.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Health Start seeks a part-time intern with highly developed organizational skills, ability to manage their time, and creative talents to work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Curriculum Designer.
The Interactive Game Development Intern will work in a team environment to design the next area of the game. They will help decide the game navigation, action, “story arc” and game play. The intern will be involved user testing which involve identifying ease of play, level of engagement, efficacy in conveying health messages, and opportunities for improving game play. This in turn will involve the intern in “debugging” the game and identifying programming and design errors to be corrected.
In addition to programming tasks, the intern also may be involved in actual design of the art, backgrounds, and animation related to the game if their skills and interests enable to do so.
Specific Job responsibilities may include:
Create graphics for an upcoming health education mobile game using Photoshop and Illustrator.
Create backgrounds using a drawing tablet for an upcoming mobile game.
Help create promotional materials for upcoming events such as flyers, web banners, and other materials.
Create visual solutions in effective ways in print and electronic media.
Develop materials to attract potential community partners.
Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
Candidates for the position must have educational or work experience with graphic design, design, website development, or related activity. Employment experience or a strong interest in health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Must have experience with the Unity game Engine especially C# programming experience, as well as Adobe Creative Suite including PhotoShop, InDesign, and Illustrator and be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, the Internet, and HTML. In addition, candidates should have some or all of the following skills:
Ability to communicate quickly and effectively
Ability to stay organized and up to date with the various tasks and assignments.
Animation and/or illustration skills a plus
Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite
Experience creating illustrations using a drawing tablet in Photoshop a plus.

Health Promotion Internship
COMPANY OVERVIEW
HealthStart is seeking a Health Promotion Intern to aid in planning and execution of community outreach programs directly related to our mission of building healthy communities through children’s science-based health education. HealthStart teaches children how to be healthy from a young age. We have developed a comprehensive, robust health and science curriculum, Health Education for Youngsters! along with a cafeteria-based nutrition awareness program, Community Health Education Workshops (CHEWs), and a mobile game, Monstralia.
Interns will help with a variety of tasks that may include assisting in implementation and organization of our Summer CHEWs, cafeteria-based nutrition awareness program What are YOU Feeding?, community-wide health promotion and outreach, implementing our marketing/public relations strategy plann and helping to execute fundraising events. In addition, the selected intern(s) may have an opportunity to participate in hands on activities with children, data collection, and tasks that help us evaluate our effectiveness.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Health Start is currently seeking a Summer 2017 intern with highly developed communications and health promotion skills who can work 12-15 hours per week. You will be part of a team implementing and evaluating HealthStart’s health promotion programs and related tasks. All of these experiences should be highly transferrable to a professional public health or health promotion work environment.
Job responsibilities will include:
Assisting in organizing and executing a 12-week CHEW series at a local community clinic.
Attending and assisting with Health Promotion activities, children’s farmers market activities, community wellness fairs, and other events that educate and raise our profile within our community
Working directly with HealthStart’s Scientific Committee
Contributing Health and Nutrition related articles for HealthStart’s Monthly Newsletter, press releases, articles for parenting and health magazines, and a blog
Other health promotion related tasks as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates for the position must have experience with or a strong interest in public health, health promotion, health communications, event planning, nonprofit development or related activity. Employment experience or a strong interest in social entrepreneurship, social marketing, health and wellness nutrition, or early childhood education is preferred. Must be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, and the Internet specifically social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, email clients, etc. Bilingual preferred, but not required
