2015-16 Institute on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault’s (IDVSA) Research Fellows Program

With generous support from the Shield Ayres Foundation, the Institute on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault’s (IDVSA) Research Fellows Program has up to five positions available for Fall 2015, with continuation in Spring 2016.  Fellows work directly with program directors to contribute in the following areas of interpersonal violence:

  1. Mapping Human Trafficking Crimes
  2. Victim-Centered Notification in “Cold” Cases
  3. College Campus Sexual Assault Research
  4. Testifying as an Expert Witness in Family Violence, Stalking and Strangulation Cases
  5. Measuring Statewide Prevalence of Sexual Assault Crimes

 Through critical inquiry and collaborations with community partners, Fellows integrate theoretical knowledge and research activities with community engagement.  This program is up to one academic year long and Fellows commit to six hours a week. Fellows receive a small honorarium. Research Opportunities available in the Prevention Research Lab

The Prevention Research Lab is looking for undergraduate research assistants!

The Prevention Research Lab, led by Dr. Keryn E. Pasch in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education, is searching for undergraduate research assistants for the Fall 2015 Semester. Undergraduate research assistants (URAs) will work on the Outdoor MEDIA II Study. This project will use objectively collected data to document outdoor food, beverage, alcohol, and tobacco advertising in the Travis County area. This project is in collaboration with sites in California, Minnesota, and Ohio. Data collectors will use electronic tools to document and code advertising and marketing. For this position, a flexible schedule with at least four hour blocks of time available during the day is required. Data collectors will go out to site to collect the data and also be required to work in the lab to code the collected data. Additional research opportunities such as literature searching, transcribing, and data summaries may be available.

REQUIREMENTS:

A flexible spring schedule with at least a four hour block of time available.

Willingness to travel for data collection.

Comfortable working with an iPod touch and willingness to learn a new computer program.

Prior research experience is a plus but not necessary.

BENEFITS:

Hands-on experience with the research process, with an emphasis on the relationship between outdoor advertising and socio-economic disparities.

Legal

  • Legal Intake: Assist with the opening procedures of new possible cases.
  • Jail Mail: Help read and correspond with prisoners and inmates in need of legal assistance.
  • Legal Filings: Drafting and filing of forms and legal documents for our current lawsuits.
  • Research: Assist in current and new research projects as well as legal research for current or future lawsuits.
  • Law Assignments: Help out law clerks organize and manage legal projects.

Community Outreach and Development

  • Development Assistants: Help research and write new funding proposals and grants.
  • Student Liaison: Be a liaison and conduct research to universities to recruit volunteers for different activities, such as a December toy drive, fund raising activities and outreach.
  • Event Planning: Help plan our events.
  • Community Outreach: Represent our office at agency and community fairs, speak to groups about special events.
  • Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing: Assist with media relations and advertising duties, including preparing for press conferences, researching information for the media, and creating ads.

Creative

  • Graphic Designers: Design visually appealing publications such as t-shirts, booklets, reports, brochures, ads, and newsletters.

Office Help

  • Clerical: Help answer phones, organize and maintain legal files, and perform day to day office functions.
  • Maintenance: Help maintain yard and outside grounds and help keep building clean.
