About Urban Mining Company (UMC):
There is no company like us in the Western Hemisphere.
Urban Mining Company is a leading US producer of Rare Earth based magnetic materials, used in a range of everyday applications including automotive, electronics, renewable energy and air conditioning sectors. UMC is a young company with a strong R&D background. Current R&D activities include setting up a magnet manufacturing plant in Austin, Texas. This plant will manufacture NdFeB-based permanent magnetic materials using a proprietary recycling technique producing high performance magnetic materials without the environmental penalty typically associated with these materials. Until the manufacturing plant’s completion, we will be operating in a temporary facility that is predominantly used for laboratory work: materials characterization and analysis. We also have a machine shop where we build components and prototypes, and modify existing pieces of equipment.
Despite our R&D/science focus, our needs as a company are very diverse, including PR/marketing, legal/regulatory, outreach, and general business needs (financial analysis, bookkeeping, etc.).
UMC is looking for someone to perform the tasks outlined below. Please note, that we are not expecting someone to perform them all. This posting is intended to capture a range of disciplines, so we encourage anyone with the following backgrounds/majors to apply:
- Computer engineer/Computer software/Programming
- Engineers (mechanical, electrical, etc.)
- Lab sciences
- Physics
- Mathematics
- Materials sciences
- Chemistry
Tasks/Skill Sets:
- Designing and implementing cost-effective equipment modifications to help improve safety and reliability;
- Developing specific projects and associated tasks with colleagues, often including input from other engineering disciplines;
- Developing, testing, and evaluating theoretical designs;
- Discussing and solving complex problems with manufacturing departments, sub-contractors, suppliers and customers;
- Making sure a product can be made reliably and will perform consistently in specified operating environments;
- Managing projects using engineering principles and techniques;
- Planning and designing new production processes;
- Producing details of specifications and outline designs;
- Recommending modifications following prototype test results;
- Using research, analytical, conceptual and planning skills, particularly mathematical modeling and computer-aided design;
- Considering the implications of issues such as cost, safety and time constraints on projects, as well as on the design and development of products;
- Working with other professionals, within and outside the engineering sector;
- Monitoring and commissioning plant and systems.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have the following:
- Proven working experience in mechanical engineering;
- Working experience with product lifecycle management (PLM), finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD);
- Hands-on experience with computer-aided engineering (CAM) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAE);
- Full proficiency with 2D or 3D engineering design and manufacturing tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Solidworks, ProE, etc.);
- Adequate knowledge of engineering analysis tools (ANSYS, ProMechanica etc.);
- Knowledge of mathematical computing and analysis tools (Matlab, Excel, LabView etc.);
- Solid understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, and related skills;
- Creativity and analytical skills;
- Ability to communicate technical knowledge in a clear and understandable manner both orally and in writing;
- Technical writing skills.
The work is mainly office and laboratory-based with regular visits to plants, factories, workshops or building sites. Factory production areas can be noisy. Dress code can vary from that necessary for office-based work to a hard hat and overalls when working on site. Travel within a working day is possible.
In addition to meeting some of the desired skill sets listed, the applicant should be motivated and work well within a team to accomplish complex tasks. The applicant should be willing to work in an R&D and production environment. As safety and the environment is very important to Urban Mining Company, the applicant should be motivated to work in a safe manner while meeting achievable deadlines. The job will require that the applicant conduct all of their work at our facility, as is required.
