About IUPRA
The Institute for Urban Policy Research & Analysis (IUPRA) is an interdisciplinary policy research institute that provides intersectional policy solutions. Our mission is to strengthen Black communities, promote social justice, and combat anti-Black racism using a racial equity framework.
Internship Details
Please note that this internship is expected to be remote, but is subject to change pending the status of the COVID-19 situation.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey information clearly
- Knowledge of writing research papers or reports (e.g., written coursework assignments)
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Interest in topics related to IUPRA research pillars – health, income and wealth, education, criminal justice, or housing
- Task-oriented with ability to manage and complete projects within specified timelines
Responsibilities/Key Tasks:
- Interns will assist on general IUPRA projects assigned, work with IUPRA team to find relevant research/resources, contribute to written policy publications, and attend required intern meetings as scheduled by the IUPRA team

- Black TX Population Indicators

This collaboration between IUPRA and the LBJ Urban Lab is a mixed method (quantitative and qualitative) research project aimed at understanding and examining the experience of Black communities across the state of Texas, in both rural and urban areas. It will involve the development of a survey instrument, distribution of the survey, collection of data, and written report on outputs and outcomes.

- Digital Technology

This collaboration between IUPRA and E4 Youth is working to address digital equity in Central Texas during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a “Move the Needle” proposal that takes a comprehensive approach to providing socioeconomic and digital equity to thousands of Austin area youth ages 16 – 22. This research project will survey 1,000 youth and families to assess their need for digital devices and broadband connection, run analyses on the data collected, and develop reports on the outcome.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the internship, students will be able to:
- Identify appropriate databases/resources for research information (quantitative, qualitative, literature, journals, etc.)
- Interpret and translate data/information from various data sources to reveal key findings/themes related to research area
- Discuss the implications of research findings through written and verbal communication
- Formulate policy publications supported by research and evidence
