Spring 21 Internship with the UT Gender and Sexuality Center

About the Gender and Sexuality Center

The Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC) at The University of Texas at Austin is accepting applications for a UT Austin student intern to assist us with a variety of projects (for course credit or personal enrichment). The mission of the Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC) is to provide opportunities for all members of the UT Austin community to explore, organize, and promote learning around issues of gender and sexuality. The center also facilitates a greater responsiveness to the needs of women and the LGBTQIA+ communities through education, outreach, and advocacy. 

Internship Description

The intern should be prepared to work in a fast-paced team environment, and will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of gender and sexuality work. They will be working closely with our Program Coordinator, who manages all of our programs and outreach along with co-managing our library, serving on a number of university committees, and other projects as needed. People from marginalized backgrounds (women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, people with disabilities, etc) are especially encouraged to apply.

Preferred Requirements

  • Commitment to feminist, trans, queer, and intersectional community -building
  • Experience working in event-planning, social media management, outreach, or women’s/LGBTQIA+ advocacy
  • Working knowledge of women and LGBTQIA+ identities
  • Capacity to work independently, on a team, and in support of other staff (including students)
  • Interest in working in student services, programming, outreach, or social justice-related fields
  • Interest in supporting the mission and value of the center
  • Interest in gaining mentorship and skills in the above areas 

Possible Duties

  • Serve on Black Queer Studies Collection Advisory Committee with UT Libraries
  • Assist with brainstorming and planning events centering Black LGBTQIA+ students, faculty, and staff with other campus units and departments 
  • Assist with brainstorming and planning GSC events
  • Assist with brainstorming and planning GSC outreach including (but not limited to) tabling and shadowing classroom visits
  • Assist with management of GSC social media (instagram, facebook, twitter)
  • Assist with leading HERE, one of GSC’s student group affiliates, with GSC’s student leadership committee
  • Other duties as needed
