Internships with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) – Spring 2022

We are looking for energetic students who are eager to learn to join our team of interns!

Internships with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) give students work experience and an opportunity to connect with other professionals in a real-work environment. DFPS offers internships state-wide across all programs, however the type of opportunities might vary based on the region.

Types of Internships

There are two types of internships at DFPS:

  • Client-focused internships, where students work side-by-side with APS, CPS, and CPI caseworkers as they interact with families, investigate cases, and provide services.
  • Support internships, where students work alongside office staff across different programs to complete high-level project-based assignments and research. Programs may include the Office of Faith-Based and Community Engagement, Legal, Human Trafficking and Child Exploitation Division, State Office APS, CPS, CPI, PEI, and Internal Audit.

Required Skills

Interns need to exhibit the following skills:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Good reading and writing skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.

Additional Requirements and Information

  • Generally, internships at DFPS are unpaid.
  • Applicants must allow DFPS to conduct a criminal history and DFPS background check.
  • Student interns who will have access to criminal history information are required to be fingerprinted for an FBI check. This costs around $15, and DFPS generally does not cover the cost.
  • Some positions require a valid Texas driver’s license.
  • Client-focused interns must be at least 18 years of age.

How To Apply

If you wish to apply for an internship, these are the steps in the application process:

  1. To get started, submit the online interest form along with your resume and cover letter.
  2. Staff will review your information and will contact you if they are interested in setting up an interview. All interns are interviewed either virtually or in-person.
  3. Selected candidates will be sent the DFPS volunteer application and confidentiality form to complete and sign electronically.
  4. Once forms have been received, staff will submit the required background checks.
  5. Upon receiving clearances, the student will be connected to their supervisor to set their start date and schedule any required trainings. Trainings vary based on the program area and type of internship.

Internships

Livestrong offers unpaid internships to current students and recent graduates interested in learning the inner workings of a nonprofit organization.

Organizational Support interns work to enhance internal and external communication in order to ensure that applicants and individuals who write in, call, or walk through our doors have a positive and engaging experience with the Foundation. OS interns primarily focus on internship program management including full-cycle recruitment (position posting, resume review, interviewing and on-boarding) while organizing social and professional development opportunities within a highly collaborative and dynamic team environment.

Finance interns assist in a wide variety of activities with many learning opportunities. This team member may assist with everything from transaction entry and audit preparation to budgeting and process improvement. The Finance intern should expect to learn technical skills related to accounting and reporting, as well as soft skills like judgment, critical thinking and communication. This internship is ideal for someone in pursuit of Business, Accounting, Economics or a similar focus. Enthusiasm and professional curiosity are required!

Events interns help Livestrong events staff as they organize events to engage constituents at all levels. This includes important data gathering, interacting with vendors, sponsors, participants, volunteers and other organizations to grow Livestrong events awareness, recruit participants and set up in-market activities. Additionally, interns assist event participants in developing successful fundraising plans to support their goals. Tasks include constituent communication, sharing fundraising tactics, fulfilling requests, and research and gather data on the event landscape and Livestrong event participants to help gage current events and new potential initiatives.

Development interns assist with projects that support the entire development team as we work to update and maintain accurate constituent records. Interns assist with donor stewardship, creating and running reports for prospect/donor events, data analysis, and conducting basic research on individual, corporate or foundation prospects.

Digital Marketing Production interns assist with all ongoing digital marketing efforts. This includes, but is not limited to, strategically generating content for Livestrong’s social media and blog, creating data analytics reports, working on email marketing campaigns and managing one or more Google platforms. The ideal candidate will have a passion to learn, communicate well within a team and be process-oriented and deadline-driven.

Mission interns support the development, implementation, and execution of Livestrong’s strategic mission and objectives. This role may include support in the organization’s delivery of patient-centered services, building and engaging communities of survivors, and leading systems change through a variety of initiatives. Interns will support Livestrong’s mission by interacting with local and national partners to impact the cancer landscape and address gaps in cancer care. Interns should have an interest in the healthcare field, and be comfortable conducting research and evaluation. Ideal candidates should have great communication and writing skills, be highly organized and have the ability to work on multiple projects at once. This is a great position for someone interested in nonprofit management, program building, community outreach, and stakeholder engagement.

Grant Interns assist the Director of Grants Management in a variety of tasks that ensures the Livestrong Solution Grants program recognizes and funds organizations who are developing cutting edge, inventive, and sustainable solutions to overlooked cancer problems. Tasks may include updating the grant application and review process, evaluating best practices, communicating with grantseekers, and writing summary reports. Ideal candidates should have a general interest in grantseeking and grantmaking practices, or an interest to learn more about philanthropic giving. Grants interns will strengthen their communication, data collection, and research skills. They should be highly organized, and able to handle multiple projects at once. Grants Interns assist in preparing for and completing the grantmaking cycle, in addition to assisting in the facilitation of the Livestrong Solution Series: monthly online webinars designed to foster collaboration and conversation among cancer organizations.

Strategic Solutions Interns will have the opportunity to conduct research, create reporting systems, work through new ideas and connect others to our work. While this position sits on the mission side of Livestrong, it may also reach into the strategy building arena and work with other departments as well. While no two semesters will be the same, the ideal applicant will be able to adapt quickly, have an understanding of all Office software systems, be comfortable on the telephone and enjoy change and challenge. This position offers a flexible work schedule and requires the ability to work autonomously. Reports directly to the Chief Strategic Solutions and Programs Officer.

Requirements

Interns will be paired with a team member for one-on-one virtual or in-person mentorship to gain experience in their area of interest.

  • Be available to work 12–20 hours per week virtually or during regular business hours at Livestrong HQ in Austin, Texas.
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and a high level of computer competency.
  • Be self-motivated, organized, willing to help with any project no matter how large or small and be able to balance multiple priorities at once.
  • Have a strong desire to make a difference, a passion for the Livestrong mission, a positive attitude and an affinity for the color yellow.
  • Be able to provide their own housing and transportation if planning to work in-person at Livestrong HQ in Austin, Texas (must be wearing mask at all times).
  • Be video call savvy and able to manage and navigate online platforms and tools.

Research Intern

The Johnson Center for Child Health & Development is a non-profit organization that provides supports and services to children with autism, developmental delays and other special needs. We serve children and families from all over the country and have a diverse and active research program. We are looking for a dedicated intern to help with data collection and entry, study promotion, and more.

We are looking for a student who is willing to take initiative, meet deadlines, has good attention to detail, and can work with multiple clinicians and professionals to execute their plans. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase your leadership skills, work closely with professionals, families, and children in both a clinical and nonclinical setting, and be an integral part of our team.

Schedule is flexible; office hours are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 am – 5:30 pm, with very limited evening and weekend hours and some remote work possible.

Clinical Intern

The Johnson Center for Child Health & Development is a non-profit organization that provides supports and services to children with autism, developmental delays and other special needs. We serve children and families from all over the country and have multi-disciplinary clinic that provides diagnostic and assessment services, counseling, feeding therapy, behavioral therapy, and nutrition and medical intervention and support.

We are looking for a student who has an interest in childhood development and the clinical treatment and supports provided to children with developmental disorders and their families. The right student is eager to learn and be a part of the overall process of providing meaningful support and therapeutic intervention. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about multi-disciplinary care.

Schedule is flexible; office hours are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 am – 5:30 pm, with very limited evening and weekend hours.

Administrative and Community Outreach Intern

The Johnson Center for Child Health & Development is a non-profit organization that provides supports and services to children with autism, developmental delays and other special needs. We serve children and families from all over the country. We host a number of of community events and educational opportunities for families and professionals, including holiday events, educational webinars, and onsite workshops. We are looking for a dedicated intern to help plan, promote, and support these critical events and classes, including webinars and social media outreach.

We are looking for a student who is willing to take initiative, meet deadlines, has good attention to detail, and can work with multiple clinicians and professionals to execute their plans. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase your leadership skills, work closely with professionals, families, and children in both a clinical and nonclinical setting, and be an integral part of our team.
