The Friends of the Texas Historical Commission’s Preservation Scholars Program offers students from underrepresented ethnic and cultural backgrounds, as well as those from nontraditional academic backgrounds, exposure to the wide variety of specializations applicable to historic preservation. Working with Texas Historical Commission (THC) staff, Preservation Scholars gain experience in the fields of architecture, archeology, economic development, downtown revitalization, heritage tourism, and more.

Whether studying history, graphic design, economics, community and regional planning, accounting, or another field, if you’re interested in learning more about how your degree can be applied to historic preservation, the Preservation Scholars Program could be for you.

About the Program

Historic preservation is an endeavor that seeks to preserve, conserve, and protect buildings, objects, landscapes, traditions, or other artifacts, both tangible and intangible, of historical significance. Our goal is to increase the diversity of professionals working in field of historic preservation, which will allow us to better understand and tell the full, authentic stories of the variety of cultures that enrich Texas’ heritage. In this program of the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission (FTHC), students are placed for a 10-week internship with the Texas Historical Commission (THC). Over the course of the internship, students work under the supervision of THC staff at the agency’s headquarters in Austin and/or in the field at historic sites to complete a project of their choosing. Select internship projects allow the option for remote participation in the program. Over the course of the internship, students meet with staff in each of the THC’s divisions and attend weekly “Brown Bag Presentations” with outside preservation organizations to learn about the preservation work happening across the state. Brief progress reports are required throughout the internship and upon conclusion. The FTHC also requires a final presentation to its Board of Trustees during the summer board meeting. The internship offers a $5,500 stipend provided by the FTHC.

Eligibility:

  • A student from an underrepresented ethnic or cultural community or an undergraduate student with a nontraditional academic background (e.g., undergraduate students who have taken breaks between high school and college careers, first-generation college students, or undergraduate students who are attending school part-time while working)
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Completed 50 or more undergraduate credit hours upon start of summer internship
  • Currently attending a college or university in Texas, or a Texas resident attending school out of state
  • Recent college graduates must have applied to or been accepted into a graduate program to be eligible (proof of application or acceptance to a graduate program will be required)
  • Grade point average of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 system
  • Prior recipients are ineligible

Health Communications Social Media Internship with Resilient Georgia – Spring 2022

 

About Resilient Georgia:

Our mission at Resilient Georgia is to lead a state-wide coalition to develop a closely aligned trauma-informed public and private network working toward a united vision to create a birth through 26 year-old integrated behavioral health system. This includes the use of essential tools such as education/teaching/training, workforce development, policy strengthening, practice research, and evaluation. Resilient Georgia is among the only organizations focused on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) prevention and increasing trauma-informed awareness and care delivery through statewide coalitions.

Health Communications Social Media Internship Details:

Our Health Communications Social Media Intern will help to build and shape a visitor’s experience with our social media channels to help further Resilient Georgia’s ability to share our work, highlight innovation and partnerships, and promote best practice resources and training. The intern will work closely with the Executive Director & Director, Strategy & Operations to receive weekly strategic input & guidance, and to ensure that all design and content aligns with Resilient Georgia’s communication objectives, vision & mission.

Social Media Responsibilities:

  • Ideate, create and post content to different social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn & YouTube)
  • Plan and adhere to content calendars to schedule posts on different social media platforms
  • Track user traffic and assess user response to different content posted
  • Plan social media campaigns to reach a wider audience and increase awareness
  • Align social media content across all communications channels including newsletter, website, and blog posts
  • Increase online interaction and engagement with state and national partners and stakeholders

Internship with the Children’s Defense Fund Texas – Spring 2022

Overview

Through the years, CDF-Texas has been honored to welcome dozens of gifted college and graduate-level students as interns to advance our mission to ensure children across Texas a Healthy Start, a Safe Start, a Fair Start, a Head Start and a Moral Start to life.

We are proud to house an intentional, structured internship program where students get firsthand experience with professional advocacy, affecting policy change, working with young people, and more, while being connected with one of the most powerful networks in the nonprofit world. Interns are vital to CDF-Texas’s work, and we are pleased to play a role in supporting the next generation of change-makers.

Our Internships

For spring 2022, we have added the following internship:

Youth Civic Education and Engagement Intern

The internship is based in Austin (remote during the COVID-19 pandemic) and provides general support for the CDF-TX Youth Civic Education and Engagement initiative. The intern works 20 hours/week supporting both our policy and organizing work to increase youth civic education and engagement. The youth civic engagement intern provides substantive policy research and reports and monitors legislative committees and the State Board of Education on improving youth civic engagement and education in Texas. Additionally, the intern assists with outreach to partners and school districts to encourage the prioritization of culturally sustaining civic education in Texas’ public school classrooms. The intern also supports outreach to young people statewide to support our Young Advocates campaign, as well as provides critical support in developing training and events to increase young people’s knowledge of and engagement with state legislative and local civic processes.

Responsibilities

  • Plans civic engagement opportunities with and for youth.
  • Conducts research on public policy, media trends and other subjects as needed.
  • Writes policy briefs and training material.
  • Assists in the development and execution of special projects.
  • Assist in maintaining CDF’s social media platforms.

Competencies

  • Ability to work effectively and calmly in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment and ability to multi-task.
  • Strong organizational and execution skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Commitment to social advocacy and CDF’s mission to be a voice for all children.
