Editorial Intern Position

The Austin Chronicle is currently accepting Editorial intern applications for the summer 2019 semester. This is an unpaid internship. School credit available, and hours are flexible. Interns will be paired with one or more Editorial sections (News, Music, Food, Arts & Culture, Screens, Qmmunity, and Social Media), work closely with editors, expand their writing portfolios, and gain first-hand experience with print and digital newsroom operations.

Applicants must be either 18 years old or have completed one semester of college. Applicants do not need to be enrolled in college to participate in our internship program.

Applicants should send a cover letter, three writing samples (journalism or academic), and a résumé to internships@austinchronicle.com, Attn: Kimberley Jones, subject line: SUMMER INTERNSHIP APPLICATION. Please include in your cover letter your background, interests, preferred Editorial sections, and why you’d like to intern at The Austin Chronicle.

Production/Proofing Intern Position

The proofing intern will perform a design check on each page of the paper before it goes to print on Wednesday night. This serves as a last call for corrections – and a great opportunity for anyone interested in the production end of print journalism. We need someone with a strong eye for detail who can pick out major errors in a timely manner as we work under a deadline. Applicants will take a proofreading test at the time of interview. EcoRise’s K-12 programs empower youth to tackle real-world sustainability challenges in their schools and communities by teaching eco-literacy, design, and social innovation. EcoRise offers internships in a variety of regions, including Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Houston, Texas, as well Washington DC, and New York City.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

As part of an unpaid, university-based one semester internship, EcoRise customizes the internship experience based on each student’s unique skills, personal and professional goals, and academic focus. EcoRise’s Education Interns support the program team by assuming one or more of the following roles: teacher engagement, outreach, and classroom support, the creation of digital assets to support teachers and students, program evaluation, event planning, and community engagement. Education Interns report directly to the Texas Program Manager.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES CAN INCLUDE

• Teacher Support and Engagement: Create digital assets such as short videos and graphics to engage current teachers and increase implementation of specific lessons and resources.
• Teacher Recruitment and Training: Assist with teacher trainings, meetings, phone calls, and conference presentations to recruit and train new teachers in new and existing regions.
• Event Planning and Community Engagement: Attend community events related to EcoRise’s mission and collaborate with local partners to organize student showcases.
• Program Support: Provide logistical support to program team staff with data collection, entry, and analysis to assess and improve programmatic support to students, teachers, and administrators.

REQUIREMENTS

• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• Self-driven personality with effective project management skills
• Attentive to details with keen aptitude for organization
• Strong computer literacy skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps
• Relevant experience working in public education and/or environmental sustainability is preferred

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

EcoRise seeks a sustainability-minded intern for the position of Marketing Support & Social Media Intern. As part of a university-based, one semester internship, this individual will support the EcoRise’s marketing efforts through a variety of tasks including: market research; data collection, entry, and analysis; writing social copy and/or blog content; and curating EcoRise’s social media presence. The Marketing Support & Social Media Intern will work closely with and report to the Marketing & Design Specialist. If you are familiar with K–12 education or environmental education, self-driven, and ready to be part of something meaningful, we invite you to contribute your skills, ideas, and voice to our team and help us inspire a new generation of green leaders!

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities will include two or more of the following based on skill, interest, and desire to learn:

• SOCIAL MEDIA SUPPORT:
  • Write and schedule posts to be approved by team lead; curate additional relevant social posts to add interests to
  • EcoRise social profiles, and attract more followers.
  • Support the organization’s Spring fundraising by assisting with the social aspect of the campaign.
  • Create a social media campaign based on an EcoRise initiative.
• MARKETING SUPPORT:
  • Market research of competitors, and emerging educational platforms.
  • Pitching to educators online who may value our services.
  • Creating content for the EcoRise website about partnerships, conferences, or programs.
  • Developing press contacts or relations to promote EcoRise programs and events.

REQUIREMENTS

• Interests in youth, education, and/or sustainability
• Experience managing social accounts and scheduling posts for an organization preferred
• Excellent written, and interpersonal communication skills
