Programs
Internship Description:
The Travis County Natural Resources and Environmental Quality Division is seeking one intern to work in our Conservation Programs in Summer 2014. Intern will provide assistance in database management, research on education and outreach materials and may assist in events.

Primary activities include 1) data entry and organization of files, best management conservation practices and facility inspections; 2) researching, evaluating and recommending recycling and energy educational materials such as guidance documents, graphic presentations and videos for broadcast or web application; and 3) researching, evaluating and recommending water quality educational materials such as guidance documents, graphic presentations and videos for broadcast or web application. Activities may also include assisting in distributing conservation
program equipment. These activities will provide an opportunity to see first hand the practical implementation of a recycling program and the value of conservation programs.

Qualifications:
• The Mickey Leland Internship application process is through TCEQ (Texas Commission on
Environmental Quality) but this Internship is for work with “Travis County Environmental Quality Program”. The Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program provides summer internship opportunities for minorities, women, and economically disadvantaged students pursuing environmental, engineering, science-related, and public administration careers
• Applicants should be generally knowledgeable about recycling and solid waste management, such as waste stream analysis, recycling processes, and challenges associated with implementing conservation programs.
• Applicants should have a basic working knowledge of database applications and be proficient in typical Microsoft Office software. Good communication skills are needed, both verbal and written. The person should be in good physical condition as some work will be outdoors in all types of weather and may include extensive periods walking.

Student Learning Opportunities:
The student will have the opportunity to learn all facets of a recycling program from the evaluation, implementation, and performance measures.

Salary, Time Commitment and Work Location:
The salary will be $13.58/hr. and the intern will work from approximately 20 up to a maximum of 40 hours per week starting in June and continuing through August, with exact dates and days and times to be determined up to a maximum of 481 total hours, with work on weekdays (M-F). The primary work location will be in downtown Austin at 700 Lavaca Street suite 500. Travis County does not provide parking for interns.

General Background:
Travis County’s Natural Resources and Environmental Quality Division is tasked with directing the County’s urban storm water management program, implementing regional air quality protection plans, protecting our endangered species and natural areas through management of the 28,000 acre Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, as well as ensuring the environmental health of our community. To this end, we monitor existing and new industrial and commercial activities in the county, provide analysis and review of new and pending environmental legislation and projects.

Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems Hiring Social/Online Media Intern

The Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems is hiring a summer Social and Online Media Intern. Join the oldest continuously operating nonprofit focused on sustainable planning and design in the United States in sharing the serious commotion it creates.

We are currently seeking a part-time (8-10 hours per week) Social and Online Media intern to manage our social media channels and blog. This is an unpaid internship that provides the opportunity to become involved with an organization that has helped put Austin on the map as a leader in influential green building initiatives. We want to engage the public in our work, both in the Austin community and beyond, and are seeking a talented, effective social media intern to maintain and enhance our online channels of communication. This internship runs from mid-May to mid-August with the possibility of extension.

Responsibilities include:
• Update social and online media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube on a regular basis• Update website blog on a regular basis
• Create compelling social media and blog content, including features on organizational news, relevant local, national, and international news, and ongoing blog series
• Develop and implement strategies to enhance reach and user engagement
• Track and analyze social media and website profile analytics/metrics
• Possibly expand social media channels to include Instagram, Tumblr, and/or others

Job requirements:
• Experience managing multiple online communication channels: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube
• Available 8-10 hours per week; you can work remotely for 6-8 hours per week, but must be able to report to our Austin office for 2-3 hours each week for a check-in with supervisor (required onsite check-in time can be modified over time depending on need)
• Have a flexible schedule that allows for dynamic social media interaction and quick response during normal business hours
• Be an excellent writer and clear communicator

Preferred, but not required:
• Experience in HootSuite
• Experience in marketing, public relations, professional social media
• Knowledge of Drupal

Theatre for Dialogue Independent Study focusing on Sexual Violence

Theatre for Dialogue Independent Study

Meets twice a week in Winship Drama Building Time and day to be determined
by student availability

Are you an actor, educator or theatre-maker? Are you interested in interactive theatre and social justice?
Then this independent study might be for you!

In this independent study project, undergraduate students will co-create an interactive theatre program for preadolescents to engage in dialogue around issues of sexual violence. Through readings, discussion and devising exercises, students will explore how to use facilitation and performance techniques
to engage in dialogue with young people.

Project Description:

Research has shown that silence helps perpetuate violence.
Theatre for Dialogue gives young people the opportunity to help young characters try out different ways of telling a trusted adult about their victimization.

“Who can I tell? How can I tell them?” are some of the questions this project will create a space for young audiences to explore.
