Fall Internships with the Texas Civil Rights Project

Looking for a great internship that will enhance your interdisciplinary curriculum? Apply to intern at the Texas Civil Rights Project. Our non-profit has been providing free legal help to low income citizens, people with disabilities, veterans and victims of violence for 25 years. Legal

  • Legal Intake: Assist with the opening procedures of new possible cases.
  • Jail Mail: Help read and correspond with prisoners and inmates in need of legal assistance.
  • Legal Filings: Drafting and filing of forms and legal documents for our current lawsuits.
  • Research: Assist in current and new research projects as well as legal research for current or future lawsuits.
  • Law Assignments: Help out law clerks organize and manage legal projects.

Community Outreach and Development

  • Development Assistants: Help research and write new funding proposals and grants.
  • Student Liaison: Be a liaison and conduct research to universities to recruit volunteers for different activities, such as a December toy drive, fund raising activities and outreach.
  • Event Planning: Help plan our events.
  • Community Outreach: Represent our office at agency and community fairs, speak to groups about special events.
  • Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing: Assist with media relations and advertising duties, including preparing for press conferences, researching information for the media, and creating ads.

Creative

  • Graphic Designers: Design visually appealing publications such as t-shirts, booklets, reports, brochures, ads, and newsletters.

Office Help

  • Clerical: Help answer phones, organize and maintain legal files, and perform day to day office functions.
  • Maintenance: Help maintain yard and outside grounds and help keep building clean.

Health Care Policy Internship with Children’s Defense Fund

Job Description: The internship is based in Austin and provides general support for the CDF-TX Policy Department. The intern works 20 hours/week, and provides substantive research, compiles reports, monitors interim legislative committees and helps with the execution of advocacy-related activities, including advocate training/recruitment, story collection, public education, legislator visits, legislative briefings and other Department projects.

The internship opportunity is available for Fall 2015. Interested applicants must submit their coverletter and resume by August 5, 2015. Start date is flexible.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Advocate outreach and recruitment
  • Policy research, briefs and training material
  • Conducts research on public policy, media trends and other subjects as needed
  • Assists in the development and execution of special projects
  • Perform other division, department, and organization-wide special projects as needed and assigned
  • Assist in maintaining CDF’s social media platforms
  • Evenings and occasional weekend activity is required, consistent with policy support for a leading national not-for-profit organization

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work effectively and calmly in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment and ability to multi-task
  • Strong organizational and execution skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Commitment to social advocacy and CDF’s mission to be a voice for all children
  • Ability to organize facts and present issues in a clear, concise and logical manner, both orally and in writing
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact diplomatically and professionally with CDF staff and external partners/contacts
  • Strong computer, Internet and research skills

Legislative Internship in the Office of State Rep Mary Gonzalez

Internship Description:

The Legislative Intern in the Office of State Representative Mary Gonzalez is an incredibly important role to the continuing success of the office. She or he is responsible for the day-to-day administrative needs of the office as well as pursuing long-term research and following up on successes from the legislative session. Not only is this role vital for continued success, but it is also absolutely integral to meeting the everyday goals of a well-run capitol office. As an intern, you will invest 15 hours per week in the office. The internship will run from September 1, 2015 -December 11, 2015.

Rep. González is seeking interns who are passionate about the future of Texas, and who are invested in seeking social justice through policy. Interns will have the opportunity to do long-term research on agenda items for the 85th legislative session, staff the Representative on Interim House Committees, and assist with the daily work of running a capitol office. Our office seeks to interrupt oppression wherever possible, and we are looking for interns to help us do this work through Legislative Session.

This internship is an unpaid position, but the Office of Representative Mary E. González is committed to ensuring that students receive school credit whenever possible.

Eligibility:

  1. Full-time undergraduate student
  2. Interest in social justice
  3. Demonstrated professionalism including excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills, strong organization skills, and accuracy and attention to detail.
