JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Senate Education Committee is offering several unpaid internships to undergraduates for the 85th Legislative Session. The Senate Education Committee is a fast-paced environment that deals with complex policy and legislation daily. The internship is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the legislature and education policy while developing ties with other legislative staffers. Committee interns will be an integral part of the public service provided by the Committee’s office. Candidates for an intern position should be hard workers, fast thinkers, and willing to help the Committee in research, policy, and administrative capacities. Applicants ought to possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills, solid computer and writing skills, have the ability to understand and explain complex policy issues, and be courteous at all times. Interns can expect to be asked to assist on policy research and to help committee staff answer phones, file documents, and other important administrative tasks. All interns function as assistants to the Committee Director and other Committee staff. The Committee will work with the student’s respective college or university to assist with course credit for the internship. The hours of the internship will vary dependent on the student’s schedule. Please bear in mind that the Committee deals solely with education policy and legislation. Those who are looking to work on a wide variety of issues should apply with specific legislator’s offices. Anyone looking to learn about Texas education policy, or to just get their foot in the door of the legislature would be excellent candidates for a position with the Committee. ASPIRA Association Public Policy Internship

The ASPIRA Association has a paid position for a public policy Internship that has the potential for a full time position in the future.  We are seeking a creative, highly motivated individual to assist in the following projects:

 

  1. Assist in the development of reports and Web Page updates.
  2. Attend and report on meetings related to public policy health and education issues of interest to ASPIRA and disseminate information to ASPIRA’s network
  3. Provide assistance with social media, including Facebook and Twitter
  4. Conduct research on potential partners for national health and education projects

 

Qualifications:

Interest in public policy issues in youth development

Knowledge and interest in working with the Latino Community

Excellent communications skills, Spanish a plus

Good interpersonal skills – Able to work in cooperation with others and as well as independently

A minimum of 16 to 20  hours/week is required. The internship will begin as soon as a well-qualified person is identified

Senator Gregory Luna Legislative Scholars Program

The Senate Hispanic Research Council is dedicated to strengthening the next generation of young leaders with this enriching Scholars
and Fellows program. Participants in the Senator Gregory Luna Legislative Scholars and Fellows Program will gain invaluable experience
and exposure to the Texas Senate as full-time legislative assistants during the 85th Legislative Session. Each participant is assigned to
the office of a State Senator or the Lieutenant Governor to perform a variety of legislative tasks. Complementing the work experience,
they will meet with local and state leaders for weekly sessions to discuss leadership development and public policies that shape the state.
Scholars and Fellows will receive a monthly stipend to compensate for worked performed and to assist with living expenses.

 

LEGISLATIVE TASKS AND DUTIES

• Draft legislative research summaries, bill analyses, floor statements, articles and press releases.
• Prepare member floor packets.
• Track bills.
• Attend legislative meetings.
• Conduct meetings with lobbyists and advocacy groups.
• Perform policy research.
• Monitor committee hearings.
• Manage constituent relations.
• Handle inter-office communications.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
• Scholar: An undergraduate student enrolled in an accredited educational institution with at least 60 semester hours completed.
• Recent graduates are eligible to apply.
• All applicants must:
– Be at least 21 years old by January 10, 2017.
– Possess high academic achievement.
– Demonstrate an interest in government and public policy through active participation in community service activities.
– Possess exceptional writing, comprehension and analytical skills.
– Display leadership qualities and potential for further growth.
– Be prepared to provide legal proof of eligibility for employment.
– Demonstrate cooperative abilities in a past project or accomplishment.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

All participants must:

• Understand that all program participants are considered full-time staff within their assigned offices.
• Though responsibilities may vary from office to office, all program participants should expect to work beyond a typical
40-hour workweek.
• Attend orientation and weekly meetings held at 7:00 a.m.
• Attend scheduled weekend events and workshops.
• Participate and prioritize all SHRC sponsored activities.
• Collectively develop and implement a group community service project.
