Most students who drop out of school are dealing with multiple problems that present barriers to their education: poverty, unattended health needs, hunger, an unemployed parent, domestic violence.

Communities In Schools is a dropout prevention program. Through campus-based programs and special projects, Communities In Schools creates a network of volunteers, social services, businesses, and community resources that work together to break down barriers and help students succeed.

Communities In Schools of Central Texas serves thousands of children and families every year, providing options where there once were none.

Campus Based Intern Position Description:

As an intern with CIS you will be placed at one of our 61 campuses throughout Central Texas at the elementary, middle, and high school level. You will be supporting the CIS Staff at that campus by:

Mentoring or tutoring one-on-one with students
Leading student groups
Organizing new campus initiatives
Administrative duties
Other duties and projects as directed by CIS staff

Intern Requirements:

The candidate is enrolled in a college degree program and serving the hours for class credit, or to gain required clinical hours toward clinical licensure.
The candidate serves a minimum of 10 hours a week for the full duration of a semester
The requirements for the internship or practicum placement are a minimum of 150 hours over the course of one semester
Interns with Communities In Schools of Central Texas must undergo and pass a fingerprint criminal background check prior to beginning on campus.
Comfortable working in a changing and unpredictable environment
Comfortable working with students who have experiences or life circumstances that may be very different from your own
Willingness to remain positive and maintain an open mind
Able to keep your personal, spiritual, and political viewpoints and beliefs to yourself

Asian Family Support Services of Austin Paid Summer Internship

Started in 1992, Asian Family Support Services of Austin is a non-profit organization that helps and empowers Asian survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence and human trafficking; improves their access to services; and increases community awareness of various forms of gender-based violence and oppression.

AFSSA is committed to providing the highest quality, client-centered and strength-based services. The Community Outreach Intern will work with program staff to increase awareness of issues related to domestic violence, educating the Asian communities about available intervention and prevention services. The Community Outreach Intern will report directly to the Community Outreach Program Manager.

The ideal candidate would be an empathetic individual with excellent listening and communication skills, who is actively engaged within their ethnic-specific community, who has strong understanding of Asian family and community dynamics, and is able to convey sensitive information in a culturally appropriate manner. They should also have an understanding of domestic violence and of immigrant issues. Preference for candidates who are bilingual in English and another Asian language, with specific focus on following: Burmese, Karen, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, or Vietnamese. Other languages include Hindi, Gujarati, or Bangla.

Essential Job Functions:

The CE Intern will support ongoing functions of the CE department. This includes implementing culturally tailored and appropriate presentations at Refugee Orientations organized by resettlement agencies. Presentation topics include Domestic Violence 101 and SA 101, Title VI, and the services that AFSSA and other agencies offers.
Intern will identify, schedule and staff booths at community events and resource fairs to represent agency and share information about domestic violence, sexual assault and services.

Additionally, the CE Intern will have the opportunity to work on the following projects listed below:

Develop and Test Outreach Materials with the specific ethnic communities: The intern will assist with creation and update of informational print materials and be responsible for organizing and implementing focus groups to test materials. The goal of the focus groups is to ensure that outreach material is culturally and linguistically appropriate.
Develop a Social Media Plan for the program in consultation with the executive director and the development team. Assist in creating regular social media posts that showcase our community education work.
Build alliances with local community groups, ethnic businesses and organizations, specifically, the Intern will be responsible for updating the database of small business that serve Asian populations in Austin and Central Texas to further enhance community education efforts.
Help implement other community education events and activities as necessary.
Distribute outreach material, including brochures, handouts, and other educational material, appropriately.
Attend agency meetings as required including staff meetings and weekly community education meetings.
Report project information and progress statuses to the Community Education Program Manager regularly using program reporting tools.
Adhere to agency protocols and policies.
Perform other duties as required.

Preferred knowledge, abilities, and skills:

Strong public speaking and facilitation skills
Strong knowledge of immigrant cultures, respect for all cultures, and ability to interact with diverse groups of people
Strong knowledge of issues related to domestic violence and immigrants
Event planning and project management skills
Organizational skills, problem solving skills, creativity, and flexibility
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks efficiently
Knowledge of gender-based violence issues and their impact on individuals and families
Bilingual in English and another Asian language among the following languages: Burmese, Karen, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Korean, Hindi, Gujarati, or Bangla
Proficiency in Microsoft Office software and the use of the Internet
Must have own transportation to travel frequently within the metropolitan area
Must be flexible to work nights and weekends

Education, Training, and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree or courses towards bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Public Health, Policy, Marketing, Communication or Adult Education, or other closely related field preferred
Experience in planning and coordinating events required

Specifications:

This position is full-time
Maximum 40 hours per week, including evenings and weekend commitments
Salary range $14.42 per hour
U.S. work permit
Experience in nonprofit sector preferred
