Founded in October 2009 in response to growing economic inequality, Cooperation Texas is an Austin-based non-profit committed to the creation of sustainable jobs through the development, support and promotion of worker-owned cooperatives. We believe everyone deserves equal access to dignified employment, which is why we place those most directly affected by social and economic inequality at the center of our work. We provide education, training and technical assistance to existing and start-up worker cooperatives in all sectors of the economy, helping launch and strengthen businesses across Texas that put people and the planet first. Video Production Team

Cooperation Texas seeks a team of 3-5 interns to edit and produce educational videos about various US worker co-ops for our Cooperation @ Work video series. This internship is for the fall of 2012, with the option of extending the project through the spring of 2013:

  • Work cooperatively to complete 5-10 short educational videos
  • Create a consistent theme and feel for the series
  • Communicate with worker co-ops participating in the project to collect footage
  • Edit footage into 3-5 minute videos
  • Work with staff and event planning intern to present Cooperation @ Work video series at events

Requirements:

  • Education level: Bachelor’s degree in progress or higher
  • Subject/Major: Radio/Film/Television; Marketing; Public Relations; Communications
  • Graphic design skills
  • Demonstrated interest in the cooperative economy
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Spanish-language proficiency preferred, not required
  • Ability to work in a group
  • Computer literate, including Word, Internet and video editing software
  • Available at least 10-12 hours per week

Research & Design Intern

Cooperation Texas seeks a research and graphic design intern for the fall of 2012.

Responsibilities:

  • Research the nature and benefits of worker-owned cooperatives at the local, national and international level
  • Research economic inequality in Texas in general and Austin in particular
  • Craft an infographic on the status of inequality in Austin and/or Texas
  • Craft an infographic that creatively depicts information gathered

Requirements:

  • Education level: Bachelor’s degree in progress or higher
  • Subject/Major: Radio/Film/Television; Marketing; Public Relations; Communications
  • Graphic design skills
  • Demonstrated interest in the cooperative economy
  • Strong written and visual communication
  • Spanish-language proficiency preferred, not required
  • Ability to work independently
  • Computer literate, including Word, Internet and design software
  • Available at least 10-12 hours per week

Research & Development Intern

Responsibilities:

  • Research and review existing literature on worker cooperative development
  • Conduct market & industry research.
  • Assist with feasibility studies & business planning
  • Work with staff on project management
  • General program support for the Cooperative Business Institute
  • Other tasks as assigned

Requirements:

  • Education level: Bachelor’s degree in progress or higher
  • Subject/Major: Financing; Business Management; Economics/Political Economy; Marketing
  • Research-oriented and organized
  • Demonstrated interest in business development and the cooperative economy
  • Strong written and verbal communication

Event Planning Intern

Cooperation Texas seeks an event planning intern for the fall of 2012.

Responsibilities:

  • Work in conjunction with staff and volunteers on events
  • Solicit silent auction items and services from local businesses and organizations
  • Assist with outreach for events
  • Design marketing materials for events
  • Serve as coordinator on the day of events
  • Other tasks as assigned
Requirements:
  • Education level: Bachelor’s degree in progress or higher
  • Detail-oriented and organized
  • Graphic design skills
  • Demonstrated interest in the cooperative economy
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Spanish-language proficiency preferred, not required
  • Ability to work independently and in a group

DEADLINE SOON: UT Strauss Center Democracy and Governance Research Internship

Democracy and Governance Research Interns
September – December 2012

The Strauss Center is seeking several Democracy and Governance Research Interns on a project researching the effectiveness of democracy and good governance programs in Africa.  The Strauss Center’s Climate Change and African Political Stability program is conducting case studies exploring which democracy aid programs—under what conditions—are most effective in Africa.  The studies will also consider how democracy programming must shift in response to varying degrees of conflict, ethnic division, and human development.  Case study countries include Benin, Burundi, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Malawi, Niger, the Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania.

Intern responsibilities will include:

Research and data collection on democracy and governance aid programs in case study countries
Research on legal texts and political histories in case study countries
Management of case study research files

Required qualifications:
Academic or work experience related to public policy, governance, democratic development, international aid, and/or Africa
Excellent research skills
Excellent writing and communication skills
Excellent organizational skills
A commitment to the mission of the Strauss Center

These are unpaid internships of 10-15 hours per week.  The internship is from September – December 2012, with the possibility of being extended in to Spring 2013.  The exact start and end dates are negotiable.

Paid Internship with Side by Side Kids

Side by Side Kids has adopted a set of core Christian values; they are realized through our after-school & mentoring programs.

Job Title: Side by Side Kids iPad Lab Tech

Side by Side Kids (SBSK) is debuting its iPad Tech Lab in fall 2012 for its afterschool program. The iPad lab will serve to help kids build academic skills in a fun and relevant way. SBSK is looking for an iPad Lab Tech to manage the daily operations of the lab and to teach the iPad Lab class to elementary age students in the afterschool program.

Main Duties:
Coordinate the iPad Lab programming with the SBSK Afterschool Program Coordinator and Afterschool Site Coordinators on a weekly basis.
Manage the daily operations of the SBSK iPad Lab at the assigned elementary school.
Develop iPad Lab lesson plans for the students that are grade appropriate.
Teach daily lessons to the students in the iPad Lab.
Evaluate the success of the iPad Lab throughout the semester.
Update and track Apple equipment used in the lab.
Complete other duties as assigned.

Time Involvement Required:
Part-time position of 20 hours/week. Must be at the assigned elementary school during afterschool program hours from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Additional hours are scheduled with supervisor. Expect some evening and weekend activities throughout the year. In addition, be prepared to pick up and drop off equipment between the hours of 2:00 pm and 6:15 pm.
