UT Resource Recovery Internship (Spring 21)

About Resource Recovery

Resource Recovery is hiring Zero Waste Student Assistants for the Spring 2021 semester. Resource Recovery is a department within UT Facilities Services which encompasses both Zero Waste and Surplus Property (the Surplus REuse Store posts separately when hiring). Resource Recovery is tasked with improving sustainability at UT, specifically with regards to reaching our Zero Waste goal to divert 90% of all materials from the landfill. Major diversion strategies include source reduction, recycling, and composting. As a result, we have the opportunity to partner and observe material processes across campus.

Internship Description:

Employer: UT Resource Recovery
Position Title: Resource Recovery Team Member – Zero Waste
Compensation: $11.00/hour
Supervisor’s Name: Lindsey Hutchison, Senior Zero Waste Coordinator
You would be a member of Resource Recovery’s Student Internship Program. All of our student interns meet weekly as a team to share and learn and create synergy across our work. Team Members are not expected to have any sustainability background – only interest in learning! As you might imagine, this year our focus and tasks will remain a bit flexible depending on campus COVID conditions. Currently, you will be a lead on a project done remotely and we are working as a team on campus one day every two weeks. Remote intern projects include staff and student outreach development and tracking campus materials and data, including creating material management visualizations/maps and waste data analyses. On campus, we are rolling out our Zero Waste Workplace program in campus office and classroom buildings adhering to all safety recommendations, focusing on converting restrooms to paper towel composting and landfill trash and recycle bin pairing and labeling. Personal protective equipment and COVID-applicable safety training are provided.
The work schedule will vary based on project needs but all efforts will be made to align with student schedules. Team Meetings may occur after 5pm on a weekday. Some weekend activities may be necessary but will be scheduled in advance.
As a result of this experience, you will:
  • Have a greater knowledge of sustainability considerations with regard to waste decrease and diversion
  • Work with a variety of campus entities to achieve project goals
Qualifications:
  • Access to computer and internet in order to work and meet remotely
  • Effective time management and ability to self-motivate and work remotely/independently
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel is a plus
  • Interest and/or experience in sustainability and willingness to learn about the inner workings of recycling, solid waste, and surplus
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and represent the department well when communicating with faculty, staff, and students
  • Timely and effective communication
  • Punctual
  • Ability to produce quality work individually and in teams
  • Organized and adaptable

Operations Intern

The Operations Intern will directly assist the Operations Manager with a wide range of projects related to internal customer service, operational systems, processes and procedures in support of UWATX’s mission. This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this internship program, the intern will learn how to take skills she or he may have acquired in school or former job experience, and apply them in a professional setting. He or she will gain a better understanding of the role that support services (operations, facilities, and IT) can play in a non-profit setting, and be better prepared to work in the arena of operations and the nonprofit sector. Through a variety of projects, the Operations Intern will learn the practical application of:
  • Customer service by assisting with front desk coverage, answering phones and greeting UWATX guests
  • Standard operating procedures by assisting with the development of new SOPs for UWATX
  • Knowledge management practices by assisting in building internal website operations content
  • Stakeholder management practices by assisting with fielding IT, operations and facility requests

Data Management Intern

The Data Management Intern will partner with the Systems and Operations Team on a wide range of projects related to data analytics, data cleaning, minimum data standards, inter-system communication, list management, internal customer service, knowledge management practices, and other duties as assigned. This internship is a hands-on experience, perfect for the person who loves to jump into complex problems and work their way to a solution. In this role, you will gain a better understanding of the role that data management plays in a nonprofit setting, work directly with many of the teams here at United Way ATX, and learn a whole lot about how a nonprofit operates. This is not a watch-and-learn internship: You’ll have a chance to work directly in systems and see the impact of your work across the organization.

You will get to work on these projects and more:

  • Managing email lists of multiple stakeholder groups
  • Data cleaning such as identifying and merging duplicates
  • Improving a network of multi-system collaboration
  • Working with internal stakeholders to ensure their needs are met

Mission Advancement Intern

Success by 6 Pre-K Language Tutor Intern

Who we want:
The Success by 6 Pre-K Language Tutor Intern will be responsible for assisting with the administrative side of professional development for program tutors, fingerprinting, and program design. As the SX6 Pre-K Language Tutor Intern you will be trained to fully understand the goals of this program and work closely with the UWATX Program Manager to implement, curriculum training, communication with partnering schools and coordinate tutor hires. This will include but is not limited to, frequent communication with tutors to provide online support with curriculum and technology, identifying and implementing procedures to streamline teacher – tutor communication, and supporting program director in implementation modification during COVID school closures.  This position will report to the Manager of Pre- K Language Tutor Program.

Spring 21 Internship with the UT Gender and Sexuality Center

About the Gender and Sexuality Center

The Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC) at The University of Texas at Austin is accepting applications for a UT Austin student intern to assist us with a variety of projects (for course credit or personal enrichment). The mission of the Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC) is to provide opportunities for all members of the UT Austin community to explore, organize, and promote learning around issues of gender and sexuality. The center also facilitates a greater responsiveness to the needs of women and the LGBTQIA+ communities through education, outreach, and advocacy. 

Internship Description

The intern should be prepared to work in a fast-paced team environment, and will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of gender and sexuality work. They will be working closely with our Program Coordinator, who manages all of our programs and outreach along with co-managing our library, serving on a number of university committees, and other projects as needed. People from marginalized backgrounds (women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, people with disabilities, etc) are especially encouraged to apply.

Preferred Requirements

  • Commitment to feminist, trans, queer, and intersectional community -building
  • Experience working in event-planning, social media management, outreach, or women’s/LGBTQIA+ advocacy
  • Working knowledge of women and LGBTQIA+ identities
  • Capacity to work independently, on a team, and in support of other staff (including students)
  • Interest in working in student services, programming, outreach, or social justice-related fields
  • Interest in supporting the mission and value of the center
  • Interest in gaining mentorship and skills in the above areas 

Possible Duties

  • Serve on Black Queer Studies Collection Advisory Committee with UT Libraries
  • Assist with brainstorming and planning events centering Black LGBTQIA+ students, faculty, and staff with other campus units and departments 
  • Assist with brainstorming and planning GSC events
  • Assist with brainstorming and planning GSC outreach including (but not limited to) tabling and shadowing classroom visits
  • Assist with management of GSC social media (instagram, facebook, twitter)
  • Assist with leading HERE, one of GSC’s student group affiliates, with GSC’s student leadership committee
  • Other duties as needed
