Pediatric Coping and Language Lab – Research Assistant Position

The Pediatric Coping and Language (PCL) Lab in UT’s School of Educational Psychology is currently conducting longitudinal research studies with low income Latinx families in Austin. This community-based participatory research study seeks to collaborate with members of the Latino community in Austin as well as those who serve them to gain a better sense of the Latino families’ experiences in research participation. This research will then inform future research studies by utilizing community member feedback and partnership as well as improving outreach and recruitment in research for underserved populations. The team is looking for an undergraduate student to help us with the project!

Primary roles/responsibilities

  • Participant Recruitment & home visit interviews (in English and Spanish)
  • Conducting and transcribing qualitative interviews (both English and Spanish interviews).
  • Filming interviews and b-roll during home visits
  • Editing video interviews to make a study recruitment video
  • One year minimum commitment and can work a minimum of 8-10 hours a week, with weekend availability
  • Preferably available to start in the Summer of 2019

Time commitment

  • 8-10 hours/week
  • 1 year minimum commitment
  • Available starting preferably Summer or Fall 2019

Required qualifications

  • High proficiency in spoken and written Spanish.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Must enroll for course credit in either EDP 379L OR be involved in a university undergraduate research program (e.g., Bridging Disciplines, Intellectual Entrepreneurship Pre-Graduate School Internship).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with Latinx teens/families
  • Familiarity with or interest in qualitative research and video interviews
  • Experience editing videos
  • Major in Radio-Film-Television Studies and/or have access to a DSLR Camera

Austin Family Institute Internship

Austin Family Institute is now accepting applicants for our Undergraduate Internship program.

To apply for a placement in our Undergraduate Internship program, please email your cover letter and resume to apply@austinfamilyinstitute.org. In addition, AFI requires three recommendation letters, one from a professor, one from a professor OR professional with whom you have worked or interned, and a non-family member character reference. What to expect from an internship at AFI

We are a non-profit counseling/therapy and training institute providing the opportunity for junior and senior students to receive direct exposure to a clinical and private practice therapy setting. Along with extensive clerical experience in a private practice setting, undergraduates are able to participate in weekly group supervision, observe individual supervision with our therapist interns, and view videos of sessions. It is a unique and rare opportunity for those interested in about entering the mental health field.

Require Qualifications

  • Must be a junior or senior majoring in psychology, human development, social work, health sciences, or related fields
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Candidates must be available to commit 14-16 hours weekly for the duration of the semester. Mondays 2-4pm are required hours.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Detail oriented and comfortable working in an office environment
  • Interest in mental health, health sciences, and/or non-profit work
  • Ability to prioritize and demonstrate good time management
  • Strong organization skills

Undergraduate Research Assistant Position – Pediatric Coping and Language Lab

The Pediatric Coping and Language (PCL) Lab in UT’s School of Educational Psychology is currently conducting a longitudinal research study with low-income Latinx families in Austin. We are hoping to better understand the relationships among bilingualism, parenting, youth coping, youth depression and other factors in this population. The team is looking for a bilingual (Spanish/English) undergraduate student to help us with the project.

Primary roles/responsibilities

  • Administering assessments in families’ homes in Spanish & English
  • Scheduling assessments with families over the phone in Spanish & English
  • Scoring, entering and analyzing data
  • Attending weekly meetings & community events

Time commitment: 8-10 hours/week

1-year minimum commitment

Available starting Summer or Fall 2019

Required qualifications

  • High proficiency in spoken and written Spanish.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA.
