UT Resource Recovery Internship

UT Resource Recovery- Resource Recovery Team Member

Description:
Resource Recovery is a department within UT Facilities Services which encompasses both Zero Waste and Surplus Properties. Resource Recovery is tasked with improving sustainability at UT, specifically with regards to reaching our 2020 Zero Waste goal to divert 90% of all materials from the landfill. Major diversion strategies include source reduction, recycling, and composting. As a result, we have the opportunity to partner and observe material processes across campus.

You would be a member of Resource Recovery’s student internship program. All of our student interns meet weekly as a team to share and learn and create synergy across our work. Additionally, Team Members will join a specific Project Team within Resource Recovery’s umbrella of work. In order to fulfill BDP Connecting Experience hours requirements, together we will identify an additional scope that you will pursue that compliments your team’s project work and builds additional knowledge/impact for Zero Waste! Team Members are not expected to have any sustainability background – only interest in learning! 2017-2018 Project Teams include:

Waste Audit: Gain hands-on experience through the assessment of campus’s trash and recycling streams. Comfort with bikes is appreciated as we use an electric-assist cargo bike to transport sorting supplies.
Outreach: Increase student awareness and knowledge with regards to reaching Zero Waste through planning of and participation in campus outreach events
Graphic design: Support campus outreach through social media development and develop signage and other graphic needs for zero waste programs
Zero Waste Workplace: Learn best practices behind implementing successful behavior-change programs and lead staff and faculty to achieve zero waste goals in each campus building

The work schedule will vary based on Project Team but all efforts will be made to align with student schedules. Team Meetings will likely occur after 5pm on a weekday. Some weekend activities may be necessary but will be scheduled in advance. Most positions allow for much of the work to be completed on the student’s own time.

The waste audit team had to put up with all my questions about where plastic bags went or where to put Styrofoam cups, but it didn’t take long for us to become friends. I definitely learned a lot and since have not looked at trash the same way.”

 “Being a part of the Zero Waste Workplace team has given me the opportunity to understand the different aspects of approaching diversion from landfills. In this experience, I learned about both the developmental and operational sides of sustainable projects. This internship helped me quantify the amount of waste that is generated on campus every day, and gave me perspective on the importance of managing our resources. This connecting experience made me realize the value of representing environmental issues in a visually appealing and simple manner, which helped me find my professional aspirations in the intersection of design, technology and sustainability. “

As a result of this experience, you will:
-Have a greater knowledge of sustainability considerations with regard to waste decrease and diversion
– Practice project management activities including planning, coordination, and implementation
– Enhance group work abilities
– Work with a variety of campus entities to achieve project goals
– Engage peers and staff to educate and motivate behavior change

Qualifications:
– Interest and/or experience in sustainability and willingness to learn about the inner workings of recycling, solid waste, and surplus
– Ability to maintain professionalism and represent the department well when communicating with faculty, staff, and students
– Timely and effective communication
– Punctual
– Ability to produce quality work individually and in teams
– Organized and adaptable

Water to Thrive Internships Summer 2018

Water to Thrive is hiring for two types of internships, please see below for description of General Intern and PR Intern:

 

General Internship Intern Description

Duration of Internship: May through August 2018 (Dates flexible)

Location: 8701 N. Mopac Expy. Austin, Texas 78759

Areas of Focus: Flexible – based on intern’s interest or area of study

Hours Per Week: 15-°©‐40 hrs per week (part and full-°©‐time positions available)

POSITION OVERVIEW

About Water to Thrive: Water to Thrive is a faith‐based nonprofit dedicated to the mission of

bringing safe, clean water to communities in rural Africa. As Water to Thrive approaches its 10th

Anniversary, over 850 wells have been built, providing the gift of clean water to more than

450,000 people in East Africa.

 

Water to Thrive (W2T) is looking for an energetic, highly motivated intern to work in our Austin,

Texas office. Previous interns have researched grant development, provided social media support, developed

marketing materials, worked on promotional strategies, and participated in increasing

community engagement. We are seeking interns who will combine a commitment to creating

positive change with their own skill set and ideas for projects and participation.

Areas where interns can contribute include technology and engineering (website development

and review, water project engineering design specifications, data entry and analysis), program

management (assisting with current project management and communication, assisting with

development of new water projects), and fundraising development (philanthropy and

fundraising, grant proposals). In other words, interested candidates should be prepared to

discuss what they would like to achieve during their time with the organization.

ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Past interns have come to Water to Thrive from various majors, including communication,

education, engineering, marketing, and public relations. Candidates should be prepared to

discuss their educational background and skill set in terms of how they can benefit the mission of

Water to Thrive, and to present a concept and goal for a task or tasks they would like to

accomplish during the internship.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

(for previous internships – will be redeveloped to suit the skills and goals of any particular person)

• Update social media channels

• Help organize well project data and create reports

• Attend organization fairs and other tabling events

• Find new grants -°©‐ apply and manage these grants

• Assist with compiling outreach contact lists & reach out to potential supporters

• Help organize donor information and profiles

• Research creative and innovative ideas to promote W2T and our initiatives

• Participate in event planning and development

• Help with office organization and management

• Create best practices documents

• Work across departments to assist as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will:

• Be a self-°©‐starter who is able to take responsibility for projects and work independently

• Have excellent written and oral communication skills

• Be detail-°©‐oriented, a problem solver, an efficient multi-°©‐tasker and extremely organized

• Be devoted to and believe in the vision and mission of W2T

• Have a strong knowledge of computer and word processing applications

• Have a working knowledge of using social media tools for business

• Have a working knowledge of emerging technology platforms

• Have an assertive, can do attitude and be able to work independently as well as be a team player

• Flexibility in schedule

• Access to a laptop computer and a smartphone device

• Must have reliable transportation

 

There may be occasional opportunities for work‐related travel for presentations or events.

Public Relations Intern Description

Areas where the PR Intern can contribute include community outreach, contacting local media,

written pieces for various channels, arranging speaking opportunities, researching best practices,

and more.

ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Experience or coursework in verbal and written communications, public relations, non-°©‐profit

management, business marketing, and/or digital media. Candidates should be prepared to

discuss their educational background and skill set in terms of how they can benefit the mission of

Water to Thrive, and how they hope to build upon or grow new skills during the internship.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

• Contact local media for event and organizational coverage

• Write and submit press releases and news stories to local papers, magazines, and websites
