Research Assistant Positions with the Gender Health Equity Lab

The Gender Health Equity Lab is looking for several research assistants.

GHEL Mission: To reduce health disparities among vulnerable individuals who experience structural and syndemic factors that increase HIV/STI risk.


Job Description: Coder

Learning Objectives:

  • Will learn how to code qualitative interviews
  • Will learn how to discuss coding discrepancies with other coders
  • Will become familiar with NVivo software

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Clean and redact participant interviews
  • Code interviews qualitatively, both independently and in group settings
  • Enter coded data into NVivo, a qualitative coding software
  • *Note interviews often contain sensitive material which may be upsetting to some people

Required Qualifications:

  • Second-year undergraduate student or higher
  • Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
  • Availability to meet with other coders on a biweekly basis
  • Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Works well in team settings
  • Self-motivated

Expectations

  • Transcripts must always remain in the coder’s possession as they are extremely confidential
  • Once transcripts are coded they must be returned to the GHEL and locked in a filing cabinet
  • Transcripts must be entered into NVivo in the GHEL
  • Once transcripts are entered into NVivo bring them to BEL 718 to be shredded
  • At least one transcript coded every 2 weeks
    • Check in with Heran after each transcript is coded
    • Enter which step of coding stage into Master Task List
    • Questions or falling behind—let Project Coordinator (Heran) know immediately to help or find another coder to help—getting coding done is more important
    • If coding is continually late, you will only be able to code while present in the lab

Job Description: Data Entry

Learning Objectives:

  • Will become familiar with REDCap
  • Will learn the difference between and importance of both qualitative and quantitative data

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Enter participant data into REDCap
  • Convert qualitative participant data into quantitative data
  • Enter quantified data into Excel

Required Qualifications:

  • Second-year undergraduate student or higher
  • Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
  • Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong reading comprehension skills
  • Works well in team settings
  • Self-motivated

Expectations

  • Data entry must occur in GHEL
  • Data entry from interview must occur within 2 business days after interview

Job Description: Recruiter

Learning Objectives:

  • Will become familiar with local community organizations who serve the study’s target population
  • Will enhance communication skills through networking with communication organizations

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Post and distribute flyers around the community and in organizations
  • Develop relationships with community organizations on the phone or in-person
  • Find new appropriate areas or organizations to recruit participants

Required Qualifications:

  • Second-year undergraduate student or higher
  • Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
  • Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester
  • Transportation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Works well in team settings
  • Self-motivated

Expectations

  • Recruiter must go into the field once a week and to different locations each time
  • Keep track of destinations for travel reimbursement (must always start and end at UT regardless of where you actually start and end)

Job Description: Researcher

Learning Objectives:

  • Will learn to conduct comprehensive literature searchers
  • Will learn how to use NIH REPORTeR
  • Will become familiar with information needed to develop grants

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Conduct literature reviews on topics
  • Search for scientific measures
  • Search for current studies through current literature or NIH REPORTeR
  • Contact local organizations

Required Qualifications:

  • Second-year undergraduate student or higher
  • Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
  • Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong reading comprehension skills
  • Prior research experience
  • Works well in team settings
  • Self-motivated

Expectations

  • Research is due 1 week from day assigned unless otherwise specified
  • Even if you are not done, check in 1 week after assigned to provide update with your status
    • Questions or falling behind—let Project Coordinator (Heran) or Dr. Nydegger know immediately in order to help or ask another researcher to provide assistance to ensure the task is completed
    • If research tasks are continually left unfinished after assigned, you will be only be given research tasks while present in the lab

Job Description: Interview Assistant

Learning Objectives:

  • Will learn how to conduct qualitative interviews
  • Will learn the process prior to and after conducting qualitative interviews

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Prepare interview bag with appropriate materials
  • Attend interviews, taking notes of observations
  • Compile materials from interview to prepare for transcription and data entry

Required Qualifications:

  • Second-year undergraduate student or higher
  • Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
  • Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Works well in team settings
  • Self-motivated
  • Transportation preferred but not required

Expectations

  • Must arrive at interview location at least 15 minutes prior to interview start time (continual tardiness will lead to losing this opportunity)
  • Must dress appropriately which means casual but no short shorts or shirts that are short, or exposing in any way. Jeans, long jean shorts, other pants (except dress pants), and casual shirts are acceptable. Do not overdress as this gives off a power dynamic that can lead to participants closing up.
  • Make sure to double check that the bag and folders have ALL materials needed, do not assume the interview assistant before you did everything. Ensure the recorders have enough battery life.

HealthStart Foundation Internships Available

HealthStart builds healthy communities through children’s science-based health education. We teach kids how their body works, what it is made of and how this relates to what to eat and how to keep their bodies fit. HealthStart lessons also teach kids that taking care of one another and our environment builds community health and wellbeing.


Game Programmer Intern

HealthStart seeks a part-time Interactive Game Development intern with highly developed organizational skills, ability to manage their time, and creative talents. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Curriculum Designer. The intern will work in a team environment to help program MonstraliaTM: A Healthy Life For Your Little Monster™ app from written design documents and wireframes. The intern will participate in user testing which involves identifying ease of play, level of engagement, efficacy in conveying health messages, and opportunities for improving game play. The intern will work with the team to fix design flaws and bugs identified during user testing. In addition to programming tasks, the intern also may be involved in actual design of the art, backgrounds, and animation related to the game if their skills and interests enable them to do so.

Required tasks/skills include:

  • Ability to organize and adjust Monstralia Unity Organizer
  • Proficiency using C# in Unity
  • Ability to work with existing code

Additional desired skills:

  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Animation and/or illustration experience
  • Experience creating illustrations using drawing tablet in Photoshop a plus.
  • Bilingual

Qualifications: Candidates for the position must have educational or work experience programming in C# and game development. Employment experience or a strong interest in health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Candidate must have experience with the Unity game Engine. All candidates must have basic computer operations skills including MS WORD, EXCEL, the Internet, and HTML. If interested in creating game art assets candidates should have experience with the Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, InDesign, and/or Illustrator.

Game Illustration Internship

HealthStart seeks a part-time intern with excellent writing, organizational skills and creative talents. You will work directly with our Curriculum Coordinator who produces and designs our curriculum, marketing, educational and outreach materials. You will help create graphics for an upcoming health education game, Monstralia: A Healthy Life For Your Little Monster. This game will have 25 different mini-games. Each game will require the creation of numerous graphics. All of these experiences should be highly transferable to any other creative work environment.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Create graphics for an upcoming health education mobile game using Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Create backgrounds using a drawing tablet for an upcoming mobile game.
  • Help create promotional materials for upcoming events such as flyers, web banners, and other materials.
  • Create visual solutions in effective ways in print and electronic media.
  • Develop materials for summer children’s health education workshop programs.

Candidates for the position must have educational or work experience with illustration, design, or related activity. Employment experience or a strong interest in health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Must have experience with Adobe Creative Suite including PhotoShop, InDesign, and Illustrator and be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, the Internet, and HTML. In addition, candidates should have some or all of the following skills:

  • Attention to detail
  • Quick study
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines with little or no daily onsite supervision
  • Some drawing/illustration experience
  • Experience with drawing tablets and creating simple digital paintings
  • Experience with Illustrator, and creating vector graphics with the pen tool
  • UI experience a plus.
  • Work on game illustration a plus.

Public Relations/Communications Intern

HealthStart seeks a part-time Public Relations and Communications intern with highly developed organizational skills, ability to manage their time, and creative talents. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Outreach Coordinator.

You will be part of a team shaping HealthStart’s message through social media that may include daily Facebook and Twitter posts, monthly newsletter production, donor correspondence and management, marketing campaigns designed to inform and attract education partners and related tasks. Additionally, you will help with the marketing of one of our premier fundraising events, Austin Gives Miles. All of these experiences should be highly transferrable to a professional work environment.

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Raising HealthStart’s profile within our community
  • Executing a media and public relations plan
  • Working directly with HealthStart’s Board and Director
  • Helping write HealthStart’s Monthly Newsletter
  • Other public relations and communications related tasks as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates for the position must have experience/familiarity with public relations, communications, event planning, nonprofit development or related activities. Employment experience or a strong interest in social entrepreneurship, social marketing, health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Experience with digital arts or graphic design is a plus. Must be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, and the Internet specifically social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, email clients, etc.

Health Promotion Intern

HealthStart seeks a part-time Health Promotion intern with highly developed organizational skills, ability to manage their time, and creative talents. Interns work 15 hours per week under the supervision of our Outreach Coordinator.

You will be part of a team implementing and evaluating HealthStart’s health promotion programs and related tasks. All of these experiences should be highly transferrable to a professional public health, nutrition, or health promotion work environment.

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting in organizing the development of Children’s Health Education Workshops (CHEWS) Snack Science Workshops as assigned
  • Attending and executing CHEWS Snack Science Workshops as assigned.
  • Attending and assisting with Health Promotion activities, community wellness fairs, and other events that educate and raise our profile within our community
  • Assisting with What are YOU Feeding? Program Implementation and Menu Analysis
  • Working directly with HealthStart’s Scientific Committee•Contributing Health and Nutrition related articles for HealthStart’s Monthly Newsletter, press releases, articles for parenting and health magazines, and a blog
  • Assisting with planning, execution, and implementation of fundraising activities (e.g., I Heart HealthStart and Austin Gives Miles)to further mission as assigned.

Development Intern

Health Start is currently seeking a part-time Development Intern with a strong interest in or prior experience with fundraising; grant writing, and event planning and execution who can work about 12-15 hours per week. Candidates for the position must be creative problem solvers with fantastic interpersonal skills. Employment experience in fundraising, proposal writing or knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies is a plus. Must be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, the Internet and Adobe Creative Suite.

Job Responsibilities

  • Help execute HealthStart’s fundraising plan
  • Perform in-depth research into grant-making organizations Write grant applications thatdisplay meticulous grammar and spelling
  • Seek financial support from individuals, foundations and corporations
  • Assist with other development projects as requested

Paid Position with HealthStart

Since 2010 HealthStart Foundation has been teaching young children the science behind good health. We teach kids how their brain, bones, muscles and circulatory and digestive systems work, what to eat and about the fitness activities needed to keep every part of their bodies healthy and strong. HealthStart’s programs also teach kids that when they care of one another and our environment they help build community health and wellbeing.

Health Programs Communications Coordinator

As HealthStart grows and expands beyond Austin, the Health Programs Communications Coordinator will act as one of our chief ambassadors. You will work with community organizations, businesses, and individuals to identify and recruit volunteers for our programs by helping them understand our mission and our impact. You will assist with program operations and help maintain outstanding relationships with the agencies and organizations that have adopted our programs. You will communicate our learning opportunities and successes through social media and other channels.

HealthStart seeks a part-time, 25 hour per week, Health Programs Communications Coordinator with highly developed organizational, written and verbal communication skills, and passion for building a healthier future for our children and our communities. This position reports directly the Executive Director.

Duties will include: 

  • Community Outreach: Represent HealthStart in the community with businesses, higher education organization, and community organizations. Assist with health promotion activities, community wellness fairs, and other events that educate and raise HealthStart’s profile
  • Social Media Outreach: Develop posts, articles and other content for HealthStart’s social media accounts and newsletter
  • Volunteer Management and Recruitment: Recruit and train interns and volunteers for HealthStart’s program delivery.
  • External Operations: Lead community-based children’s health education workshops at various locations with various community partners. Assist with program content and materials development
  • Internal Operations: Attend and assist with various HealthStart Committees

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree or be in the process of completing their bachelor’s degree
  • 1-year nonprofit experience working with volunteers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (writing sample required).
  • Experience managing and delivering social medial content preferably on Facebook,Instagram, and LinkedIn
  • Work well in a collaborative, team environment
  • Basic computer operations including WORD, EXCEL, PPTX, ADOBE, and Dropbox and G-Suite

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS

  • $1400 per month

  • 2 weeks paid vacation and 8 paid holidays
