Children’s Defense Fund Internships Available

Stipend: $450 summer, $750 fall/spring if funds available

Deadline: Application are accepted and interviews are done on a rolling basis. Deadline for fall applicants is August 1st.

Communications/Policy Intern (20 hrs/week)

Job Description: The internship is based in Austin and provides social media and communications support for the CDF-TX Policy Department. The intern works 20 hours/week, and will contribute to social media campaigns to promote the research, reports, legislative issues and advocacy-related activities of the organization. CDF-TX organizes advocate training/recruitment, story collection, public education, legislator visits, legislative briefings, and public policy events.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support CDF social media platforms
  • Monitor blogs and social media accounts of allied groups to develop basic content knowledge
  • about current policy issues related to health care and children’s health
  • With supervision, plan, prepare, and execute social media campaigns (Facebook, Twitter,
  • Instagram) focused on current public policy issues and other subjects as needed
  • Organize weekly and monthly content calendars
  • Assist in the development and execution of special projects and events
  • Perform other division, department, and organization-wide special projects as needed an assigned

Job Requirements: 

  • Experience using social media for advocacy efforts, volunteer or paid
  • Visual design skills, video skills a plus
  • Ability to work effectively and calmly in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment and ability to multi-task
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and execution skills, attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact diplomatically and professionally with CDF staff and external partners/contacts
  • Strong computer, Internet and research skills

Youth Civic Education and Engagement Intern

Job Description: The internship provides general support for the CDF-TX Youth Civic Education and Engagement initiative. The intern works 20 hours/week supporting both our policy and organizing work to increase youth civic education and engagement. The youth civic engagement intern provides substantive policy research and reports and monitors legislative committees and the State Board of Education on improving youth civic engagement and education in Texas. Additionally, the intern assists with outreach to partners and school districts on behalf of the Texas Civic Education Roundtable to support the prioritization of culturally sustaining civic education in Texas’ public school classrooms. The intern also supports outreach to young people statewide to support our high school voter registration campaign, as well as provides critical support in developing training curriculums to support young people’s knowledge of and engagement with state legislative and local civic processes.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plan civic engagement opportunities with and for youth
  • Research policy to create briefs and training material
  • Conduct research on public policy, media trends and other subjects as needed
  • Assist in the development and execution of special projects
  • Assist in maintaining CDF’s social media platforms

Health Care/Immigration Policy Intern

Job Description: The internship provides general support for the CDF-TX Policy Department. The intern works 20 hours/week, and provides substantive research, compiles reports, monitors interim legislative committees and helps with the execution of advocacy-related activities, including story collection, public education, legislator visits, legislative briefings, special event planning, and social media work. Policy areas vary but generally focus on healthcare and immigration.

  • Assist in the development and execution of special projects
  • Perform other division, department, and organization-wide special projects as needed and assigned
  • Assist in maintaining CDF social media platforms

Internship with It’s Time Texas

Stronger Austin Kids Program, It’s Time Texas

Position: After School Instructor

About Stronger Austin: Through the Stronger Austin Program, It’s Time Texas and our partners will significantly expand access to free programming that increases physical activity, improve diet, and foster community engagement and development. Our approach builds on the latest science and will activate and strengthen neighborhood partnerships and places/spaces to create a stronger, more united Austin community.

Stipend: $12/ hr

Dates of Position: 8/21/19- 12/13/19

Time Commitment: 2:30pm-5:45pm, required to work at least 2 days M-Th

Location: Greater Austin area

Job Purpose:

To help children learn more about living a happy and healthy life through play. We need a people-person who enjoys working with children.

Duties:

  • Teach, participate, and supervise a variety of activities, and skills utilizing the Teach Healthier mobile app
  • Monitor children during dinner or snack time
  • Assist children with homework
  • Complete other instructor duties as assigned by the Stronger Austin Kids Leadership Team or Site Coordinator

Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with children is preferred, but not required
  • General computer literacy to answer e-mails and submit timesheets
  • Ability and willingness to work independently and follow instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Adaptable Individual
  • Ability to withstand prolonged standing and physical activity
  • Ability to travel to designated work site(s)

Pediatric Coping and Language Lab – Research Assistant Position

The Pediatric Coping and Language (PCL) Lab in UT’s School of Educational Psychology is currently conducting longitudinal research studies with low income Latinx families in Austin. This community-based participatory research study seeks to collaborate with members of the Latino community in Austin as well as those who serve them to gain a better sense of the Latino families’ experiences in research participation. This research will then inform future research studies by utilizing community member feedback and partnership as well as improving outreach and recruitment in research for underserved populations. The team is looking for an undergraduate student to help us with the project!

Primary roles/responsibilities

  • Participant Recruitment & home visit interviews (in English and Spanish)
  • Conducting and transcribing qualitative interviews (both English and Spanish interviews).
  • Filming interviews and b-roll during home visits
  • Editing video interviews to make a study recruitment video
  • One year minimum commitment and can work a minimum of 8-10 hours a week, with weekend availability
  • Preferably available to start in the Summer of 2019

Time commitment

  • 8-10 hours/week
  • 1 year minimum commitment
  • Available starting preferably Summer or Fall 2019

Required qualifications

  • High proficiency in spoken and written Spanish.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Must enroll for course credit in either EDP 379L OR be involved in a university undergraduate research program (e.g., Bridging Disciplines, Intellectual Entrepreneurship Pre-Graduate School Internship).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with Latinx teens/families
  • Familiarity with or interest in qualitative research and video interviews
  • Experience editing videos
  • Major in Radio-Film-Television Studies and/or have access to a DSLR Camera
