About Festival Beach Food Forest
Festival Beach Food Forest (FBFF) is a publicly accessible food forest and grassroots initiative located on city parkland in East Austin. We exist at the intersection of food justice, ecological restoration, and community power-building. We use Sociocracy, a non-hierarchical and consent-based governance model. This means interns will have access to all levels of our organizational systems and knowledge, significant autonomy, and participate in all team decisions relevant to their scope of work.
Interns will work closely with our team coordinators to build their own portfolio of projects and help shape the systems that will guide future volunteers and leaders. The tracks below are starting points, and we welcome collaboration on goals and deliverables based on individual strengths and interests.
Grant Writing Intern
As our Grant Writing Intern, you will actively research, lead, and draft grant proposals in support of our programs and operations. You’ll work closely with our Grant Circle to prioritize funding needs, develop compelling language about our impact, and submit proposals to private and public funders. This is a hands-on opportunity for someone ready to take the lead on writing projects and improve their skills in strategic storytelling, budgeting, and navigating institutional funding processes. You will also contribute to building templates and internal documentation to support future grant seekers at FBFF.
Fundraising Intern
Our Fundraising Intern will help grow our Giving Guild and donor network through backend organization and people-powered outreach. You’ll be responsible for building and maintaining donor research lists (individuals, businesses, foundations), improving our BetterUnite fundraising infrastructure, and developing outreach materials such as tabling scripts, signage, and donor communication templates. You’ll also assist with coordinating and hosting pop-up shops and donor engagement at our monthly volunteer events. This internship is ideal for someone excited to build relationships, experiment with community-based fundraising strategies, and create systems that future volunteers can use.
Communications Intern
The Communications Intern will help shape FBFF’s digital presence by contributing to newsletters, social media, and storytelling campaigns. You’ll support monthly content planning, create and publish posts across Instagram and Facebook, and contribute to community outreach materials such as flyers, blurbs, and signage. This is a great fit for someone interested in environmental storytelling, public engagement, and brand building. You’ll also help organize and maintain our communications archive, streamlining tools and templates to support future collaborators.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for people who are comfortable in collaborative environments, willing to participate in self-governance models, and inspired by our work. If you’re unfamiliar with us, check out this segment produced by PBS (https://youtu.be/jNNwcXL29lg).
