GO! Austin / VAMOS! Austin Communications Intern (PartTime)
GO! Austin / VAMOS! Austin (GAVA) is a coalition of residents, community leaders, nonprofits and other institutions that collaborate to improve the health of the Dove Springs (78744) and 78745 communities. Through community organizing strategies, GAVA staff work to develop resident led teams and initiatives that increase access to and participation in physical activity and improved nutrition. GAVA supporters have agreed to align their resources and expertise for greater positive impact, especially as it relates to the health of children.
Communications Intern Description
This position provides an intern with the opportunity to participate in efforts to expand a resident led coalition’s capacity by engaging and growing our audience of funders, community stakeholders, and residents. The intern will be able to apply knowledge learned in coursework related to media and marketing strategies for a wide variety of audiences, and build a bilingual portfolio of work for future employers. Though GAVA currently works with eight organizational partners and over 1,100 community residents, we are looking to reach more stakeholders among the 100,000+ residents in the two zip codes. We are also looking to improve our fundraising efforts through improved communications strategies, which will give the intern an opportunity to participate in our vital fundraising campaign. Our regular communications effort would include: a monthly bilingual newsletter and calendar, a Facebook page, GAVA website updates, press releases for our public agenda, publications that may assist in fundraising efforts, and internal documents for our ongoing organizing/leadership development portfolio. This intern will work closely with GAVA’s Community Directors, our Partnerships and Development Associate, potentially our Community Organizers.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be bilingual in Spanish and English, and have a deep understanding of the communities in which the work will be done, and an ability to relate to and connect with individuals and groups within the two zip codes. Candidate will demonstrate computer proficiency, ability to work independently, and excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and Spanish. Candidate must also demonstrate knowledge of different media and engagement strategies to connect with a variety of audiences. Ability to work with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus. Applicants must be able to inspire resident stakeholders through narratives of our organization’s work.
Functions
● Identify and create connections to / platforms on media outlets that would further the GAVA mission to reach target audiences
● Develop marketing plan for GAVA events on social media and published media sites with
guidance from Community Directors
● Manage GAVA’s Facebook page and Squarespace web page, creating bilingual posts
● Manage publication and distribution of monthly bilingual newsletter
● Create bilingual press releases related to key wins and activities
● Work with the Partnerships and Development Associate to create communications strategy
to attract funding opportunities and develop relationships with major funders
● Participate in supervisory and team meetings as available.

● Participate in an effort to grow our reach to community stakeholders
● Utilize classroom knowledge to create a sustainable marketing campaign to engage a
variety of audiences (community residents, local nonprofits, government entities, and
funders)
● Participate in fundraising campaign through targeted marketing and media efforts
● Build bilingual portfolio of work for future employment opportunities
Requirements
● Must be bilingual in English and Spanish
● Strong, professional written and verbal communication skills, including business, creative
writing and simple writing for audiences with limited formal education.
● Have knowledge of social media and marketing strategies
● Provide own transportation and cell phone; local travel required
Qualities of a successful candidate:

● Responsible, creative, organized, and enthusiastic
● Working on a degree in communications and or another relevant field
● Digital marketing strategy and online marketing experience is a plus
Position Details
● Part-time, unpaid internship with flexible schedule (min 5 hrs/week; max 20 hrs/week)
● GAVA will help students submit requirements for academic credit as needed
